What do you think of the d300s

hmmm…. long sigh…. how do I feel about the D300s…. well I bought it, so obviously it has strong points. One of them being that it works with all of the lenses I had for my Nikon FM2, even the manual ones from the 70’s and 80’s. It also has very low noise even at a high “ISO.” It takes nice pictures… although personally I feel like the color is always on the red side even when I customize the white balance, so I am definitely color correcting 100% of the time. But it still doesn’t compare to my film cameras… a full resolution scan of a medium format negative completely blows it out of the water.

I feel like it’s necessary to have a digital SLR from a practical working standpoint - sometimes you have to do it fast and cheap… and for that purpose I think the D300s is a good option. But whenever I have the choice I prefer to shoot film.

Bourbon Street by Night

While I was in New Orleans, I took advantage of playing around with my Nikon D300s a little more at night. I can’t use film all of the time, some clients just won’t have it, so I needed a digital SLR that would work with the lenses I already had for my Nikon FM2. My main other concern was digital noise, which I hate, and editors hate. I love natural light, and try to get away with using it whenever I can… which is usually easier in film because film grain is pretty and digital noise is ugly. However, I had been told that the D300s had very little digital noise at 1600 and higher, so that was a definite selling point for me.

(All of these are no flash, shot on ISO 1600, with a manual 28mm wide angle lens. I also did some minor color adjustments because I feel like the D300s has a tendency to shoot on the red side…)

Nikon D300s HD Video Test:

I’m testing out the HD video funtion of my new Nikon D300s; this is my friend’s daughter Emma, who came over today and is so ridiculously adorable. I shot with my 28mm wide angel lens from my FM2.

I feel like the image quality is really good… although I am sure that is mostly because of my old lens. And I have to admit that so far I have prefered every photo I’ve taken with the D300s in black and white… not sure what that means…

Liking my Nikon D300s…

It’s not film… but with my old lenses and shooting through a transparent black scarf it’ll definitely do in between film developing.

Testing out my new Nikon D300s…

This is with a 28mm wide angle lens that I originally bought for my FM2. I feel like it’s got a lot of depth for digital…
