On Macro Lenses…

I keep seeing different versions of faux macro lenses or macro lens “hacks” or even macro filters…. For anyone really interested in doing macro photography: INVEST IN A REAL MACRO LENS. Yes, macro lenses are expensive; they are amongst the most expensive of lenses…. but there is a good reason and they are worth it. A macro filter or fake macro will never, ever compare to the real thing.

Now, would I recommend spending $1000 on a fish-eye lens? No (unless you work for a skateboarding magazine in which case I would say yes.) Would I recommend spending $1000 on a really fantastic macro lens if you’re serious about macro (or beauty) photography? Yes, because a real, quality macro lens is a wise and worthwhile investment. But you can get them for cheaper than that… I’ve had my macro for over 15 years and I have used it for everything from texture shots, to make up and beauty, to product detail, to super cute close-ups of my dog because I am obsessed with her…

So basically what I’m saying is, if you want to shoot macro invest in a real macro lens.
